TKS Customer Information
809 Area Code Scam
As of: 2008-09-12
Long distance dialing scams have been know to originate from area codes 809, 284, and 876. If a scam number is unknowing dialed, the caller is charged a higher-than-normal per minute rate for the call.
Recently e-mails on this topic have been circulating online. Very often these e-mails are spamming scams forwarded by spammers under the pretext of "useful consumer information: Do not dial 809".
TKS advises customers to:
- Return phone calls to known numbers.
- Exorcize caution with e-mails from unknown senders; it is very often best not to forward, reply to, or open attachments.
......................................................................
809, 284, and 876 are in fact the area codes for the Dominican Republic, British Virgin Islands, and Jamaica respectively. Not part of this scam are standard phone numbers in these counties. The vast majority of telephone numbers in these area codes are in fact entirely legitimate.
The 809 scam typically involves baiting the consumer to make a phone call to a foreign service number, without disclosing the cost of the call. This is very often done by leaving a message on an answering machine requesting a callback in order to claim a “prize” or to find out about a “sick” or “injured” relative.
With their 3-digit area code, the scam numbers are easily mistaken for a regular US telephone number. Because telephone records will indicate that the disputed number was initiated or dialed from the consumer’s phone line, it can sometimes be difficult to contest the charges stemming from these scams.
CT1+ and CT2 cordless phones banned as of 2009
As of: 2008-09-01

The radio frequency range of “first generation” CT1+ and CT2 cordless phones will no longer be assigned to this type of consumer electronics device. (CT1+: 885 - 887 and 930 - 932 MHz / CT2: 864.1 - 868.1 MHz).
CORDLESS TELEPHONE FACTS
- Only DECT cordless telephones may be used in Germany starting January 01, 2009. (Note: always dispose electronic devices in accordance with local waste and recycling regulations.)
- It illegal to use North American/U.S.A. cordless phones in Germany.
- How do you determine what type of cordless phone you have? Check the product ID tag on the device, consult the owner’s manual, or if no documentation is available contact the manufacturer.
- Be cautious with phones sold at flea markets or that “came with the house”. These phones may not necessarily use the DETC standard.
You could face stiff penalties if you do use a phone that does not comply with German radio frequency regulations.
